Helping people into employment

Ali's Journey Into Employment

Ali from the West Midlands

Why were you looking for employment?

I left university with a degree in physics and was having trouble finding work in a related field. I did however get an unpaid internship at a software company for three months but was not offered a full time position after completion. I was unemployed for over one year.

Why did you come to The Salvation Army Employment Plus Centre?

I was on Job Seekers Allowance for more than six months when my adviser transferred me to an agency which he said could help me further. Therefore, I was required to go to the Employment Plus Centres in Lye and Cradley Heath.

How you were feeling about looking for work?

I appreciated any help I could get in looking for work in a related field to physics but most of my advisers whether at Employment Plus or the Job Centre told me that I was probably better off searching for work by myself as I was already signed up to most online job sites and knew what I was doing. So overall I felt confident in searching for jobs myself and grateful for any assistance I received.

How did The Salvation Army help you?

Employment Plus advisers helped quite a lot as they offered practice interviews and also gave great suggestions such as looking for alternative jobs which were not directly related to my desired field but could be used as a stepping stone to a better job. I also managed to get an interview thanks to an Employment Plus adviser who had applied to a job on my behalf.

Where are you working?

I worked for a care agency called Your Care Services based in Birmingham, which I got through Employment Plus. At the start I was working in the office as an admin worker but then worked as a support worker. I continued to look for vacancies related to physics and stayed in contact with an Employment Plus Life Coach who is helping me with searching for the right job.

Recently, I received a call out of the blue from an agency that found my CV online. They had an opportunity to work with a freight company and thought I would be a good candidate. I am due to start there soon.

How are you feeling now that you have found employment?

I am in a better financial position then I was when I was on Job Seekers Allowance as I can help pay towards household bills. However, in terms of career aspirations, I do believe I am still in search of the right job as I am not really using much of the knowledge I learnt at university and would love to do so.

Would you recommend this project to other people in a similar situation?

Yes. The more help you have, the more likely it will be that you will find employment. I got a job and some great advice and help searching for the right job for me. The job gave me new experiences which I wouldn’t have otherwise had.
